Cultural Experience with Awaken Studios (USA)

We had the privilege of hosting a cultural day at Karaapiro Lake Side Resort for a visiting group from Awaken Studios (USA). Matua Bodie — a highly respected leader and protector of Maungatautari — led the group through a wero, a traditional form of welcome that expresses both challenge and aroha, preparing the visitors for the proceedings ahead. This was followed by a whakatau, a traditional greeting that settled the group and formally welcomed them into the space. The day continued with a vibrant kapa haka performance, where waiata and haka were shared and explained through storytelling to highlight their cultural significance. Guests were then invited into smaller rōpū, guided by our facilitators through hands-on activities including poi, tī rākau, haka, and mau rākau, creating an immersive and memorable cultural experience grounded in connection, learning, and shared understanding.
